Who took the snow leopard photo on the Mac OS X Snow Leopard box?

PDN Pulse did a bit of research and found out that photographer Tim Davis is responsible for the snow leopard photo used on Apple’s Mac OS X Snow Leopard packaging. As it turns out, it was very hard to track down this information and in the end, it was an archaic email system from OrphanSearch that proved to be the best place to find answers. Cool!

Never before published photo of “Tank Man” by Terril Jones

First off, I just want to say that I had no idea there were actually 4 different photos of the so-called “Tank Man” in Tiananmen Square, but there are and The New York Times caught up with all four photographers to get their take on one of history’s most iconic photos. According to the Times, all 4 photos were taken from the Beijing Hotel overlooking Changan Avenue (the Avenue of Eternal Peace).

Anyway, it turns out that due to that article in The New York Times, a fifth and never-before-published photo of “Tank Man” was revealed today. The photo was taken on the ground by Terril Jones and in his photo you can see “Tank Man” standing at far left in the distance as the tanks come barreling down toward him. This is pretty amazing that even 20 years after the incident new images are still coming to light.

Find original Flickr photo pages with FlickFindr

When I come across a link to an image on Flickr that is a direct image URL (like this, for example) I consider it a very irresponsible act of internet publishing. I liken it to hot-linking which is already considered a big no-no in respectable circles. To give credit back to the photographers, Jarred Bishop has created FlickFindr, a website that reverse engineers the Flickr image URL to point back to the original Flickr image page (if you’re curious, the image linked previously can be found here). FlickFindr is certainly a must-have bookmark for me as I seem to come across more and more direct image links on Flickr lately…

This photograph by Brian Widdis was selected as PDN’s photo of the day and shows two area high school marching bands squaring off in a fun competition in front of Detroit’s abandoned Michigan Central Station.

This photo is part of a larger series of photographs by Brian entitled “Can’t Forget The Motor City” in which he and fellow photographer Romain Blanquart attempt to tell the story of Detroit beyond simply showing crumbling buildings and decaying artifacts.

Photograph of Lincoln in front of The White House

A photograph from the collection of Ulysses S. Grant has emerged that may depict Abraham Lincoln in front of the White House. The photograph was taken in 1865 and is believed to be the only photograph of the former President in front of the building. It is also thought to be one of the last photographs of Lincoln before his assassination in April of that same year.

As for me, I honestly couldn’t even tell that there were people in this photograph. So I’ll leave the investigation to the professionals who clearly see a tall man amidst the black blobs in this image.

Paintings by Roberto Bernardi

This is going to blow your mind. Believe it or not, the image above is not a photograph. It’s an oil on canvas painting made by Roberto Bernardi.

Roberto Bernardi specializes in painting hyper-realistic scenes using nothing but oil-based paints. Even after knowing this, I still cannot believe that these are not straight photogaphs. The reflections, the lighting and the overall colors are so exact in comparison to a photograph or what you may see in real-life that it’s hard to distinguish between the two.

Thanks Heather!
