Ren Xin, an 11 year-old Chinese girl has undergone surgery in China’s top military medical hospital to remove a third arm that is attached to her back!

The third arm is the result of an under-developed parasitic twin that grew inside the mother’s womb. Because of her rare third arm on her back, many people are calling Ren Xin “the angel with wings“. There are only 4 other known cases like Ren Xin’s in China’s medical history.

The surgery was a matter of life or death for Ren Xin because it involved extremely complicated combinations of surgeries by different teams of doctors all at once.

Birth defects in China have soared more than 40 per cent since 2001, now accounting for between four and six per cent of total births every year.

Government officials have linked the rise to the deterioration of the country’s environment.

The coal-rich province of Shanxi where Ren Xin was born has the highest rate of birth defects and is far above the national average.

Thankfully, it looks like the surgery was a success, but doctors are being cautious and awaiting more results further down in the time line.
