I talked about the early leak of this camera yesterday, but it looks like Canon has officially announced the SD780 IS now and released press images for us to scrutinized more closely. I was on the fence about the gold, but now that I’ve seen it up close, I think I like it. I’d still prefer the silver color for a compact digital even though the matte black one looks nice too (but matte black on cameras always gets shiny after lots of use).
I do believe that this is the most attractive camera that Canon has just announced.

At the moment, Canon still has the yet unannounced SD780 IS and SD960 ISon its “new products” page. It looks like Canon is steering away from the hard corners of their previous compact digitals and going with the somewhat controversial rounded corners look. At least the new rounded corners still leave the camera relatively rectangular, unlike some of Canon’s other PowerShot siblings.
The SD780 IS sounds pretty enticing though based on those specs listed. The ability to shoot HD video at 720p is pretty neat and can only mean better online video as more and more people adopt these fantastic compact cameras. I’m not so much interested in the SD960 IS because 1) it looks ugly; and 2) it has that retarded rounded shape I really hate from Canon compact digitals. In any case, the early specs on both cameras look very similar so the aesthetic and price points of each camera are going to be a factor in one selling better than the other.
Oh, and the SD780 IS comes in gold. That’s pretty nifty. But I’d like to see what kind of gold before making a final decision on whether I think that’s neat or not.
