Photo shows blue whale belly-up in the Pacific Ocean

This is so sad. The already-endangered blue whale has lost another family member to a possible collision with a ship. The photo above taken by Flip Nicklin shows the blue whale belly-up in the Pacific Ocean with a flock of seagulls perched on its underside. Certainly not the kind of photo of a blue whale you would expect to see. :( [via]

Despite the rust and overall lack of upkeep, I’d still want to play in these playgrounds.

Canada Sinking Ship

The Canadian Coast Guard released these photos of the Spanish ship, Monte Galineiro, taking on water off the coast of Newfoundland on Sunday, February 22, 2009. The Canadian Coast Guard managed to rescue all 22 people on board the vessel before it sunk into the sea.

I wonder if there’s a video of this event. If so, I’d love to see it.

How ships get launched into the sea

According to what I just watched on YouTube, there are really only 2 ways to put a ship into water. You either drop it in (for lifeboats and other small watercraft) or you slide it in. Now, there are 2 ways (also according to what I’ve just watched on YouTube) that you can slide a ship into water. You can have it go in one end first and gradually have the whole ship in water, or you can push the entire ship from one of its sides and watch as the ship violently rocks back and forth waiting for buoyancy to take over.

And that second option is very exciting to watch! So click inside to see some impressive videos of big things staying afloat!

Crazy photo of the beached ferry Riverdance

February 6, 2008 @ 12:36 am

The cargo ferry Riverdance was hit by a freak wave over the weekend, resulting in a valiant rescue effort to save up to 19 crew and 4 passengers from the vessel. The coast guard, the Royal Air Force, and lifeboat services managed to pluck 14 people off of the boat before it ran aground. The ferry became beached at the North Shore of Blackpool on February 1, 2008.

February 1, 2008 – The day the ferry Riverdance ran aground.

Since then, local officials have been trying to straighten the ship back from its 60-degree slant along the shore by pumping water into its ballast tanks and emptying the ship of its fuel. The effort to free the ship could last several weeks.

Check out the video below of the ship gradually leaning as the days pass.

Also take a look at the dramatic rescue video below of a person getting airlifted off of the Riverdance. As you’ll hear in the videos, the wind is pretty intense and the weather hasn’t improved much.

Here’s another view of the rescue from the shore side.

As you might have guessed, some of that cargo did wash ashore.
