There’s been quite some talk about President Barack Obama fighting to keep his beloved BlackBerry on him even when his advisers thought that he’d have to give it up for privacy and security reasons once he took office. But of course, being the tech-savvy man that he is, Obama won the fight to keep his personal mobile device as long as he agrees to submit all correspondence on it as stated in the Presidential Records Act.
A fellow BlackBerry user myself, I know what it’s like to be away from the device once you’ve started to really use it every single day to keep in contact with people. Some analysts are saying that if Obama were not a public servant, that he could easily be in the asking for up to $50 million from RIM for endorsing his BlackBerry device with such fervor.
But being the President of the United States means that you need the utmost in security and encryption, and unfortunately, a BlackBerry simply cannot guarantee that, so there’s word going around that Obama may be equipped with a Sectera Edge from General Dynamics. The Sectera Edge is a rugged secure smartphone that runs Windows Mobile and it features a host of technology inside that is likely to rival an entire communication hub.
There’s hardly any more room for arrows and bullet points.
Anyway, the only thing that sucks about it is that it looks so damn ANCIENT. But I guess it’s like having a really crappy-looking car with a super-charged engine underneath. It’s not what’s on the outside that counts…
It’s here! It’s here! The update to the BlackBerry Curve, previously codenamed “Javelin” and now officially named the Curve 8900, will be on sale starting early February (some say as early as February 11th or 18th). For those who don’t know, the quickest description of this smartphone is that it is basically a BlackBerry Bold in smaller dimensions and without 3G. However, I’ve read that the EDGE connection on the Curve 8900 will actually be a bit faster than standard EDGE on other networks, so if you’re worried about speed, you should be alright for now.
Whee! I know a bunch of people who are waiting for this, so I’ll be excited for them to get it too!
The XPERIA X1 combines a 3-inch clear wide VGA display and a full QWERTY keyboard within a quality metal-finish body. With Windows Mobile® inside, the XPERIA™ X1 lets you choose from a dynamic range of activities at anytime and anywhere; from enjoying your favourite entertainment content to working efficiently on-the-move. Access a world of experiences simply by touching the XPERIA™ panel on the screen.
The goal of the XPERIA X1 is to have all of your multimedia capabilities (video, music, phone, contacts, email, internet, etc.) in one device that’s small enough to carry with you at all times.
Now that the need to be fully-connected at all times is increasing, the XPERIA X1 looks like a solid player among only a handful of good choices.
Here are some specs to dwell on:
3″ WGVA touch-screen
full QWERTY keyboard
joystick navigation
3.2MP camera
bluetooth, WLAN, GPS, FM radio
microSD expansion slot
Windows Mobile
And with all of that comes the usual phone features you’d expect in any smartphone nowadays.
The unit is available beginning the second half of 2008 in silver and black. If I had to choose, I’d get the XPERIA X1 over a Nokia N810.
