How do you figure out if somebody in a movie is a bad guy? Just look at their complexion, says Brett Erlich!

Is Bandslam a victim of poor marketing?

bandslam

Nikki Finke has a very surprising write-up about how the movie Bandslam (starring Vanessa Hudgens, Aly Michalka, and Gaelan Connell) is an excellent example of how a great movie can suffer from poor marketing.

I thought Bandslam was simply another movie similar to High School Musical because of the way the trailers showed Vanessa Hudgens up front and center. But it turns out that Bandslam is much more than just a typical teen feel-good flick. It’s an indie movie with an incredible soundtrack that has been buried by critics and potential viewers because many are turned off by the fact that it looks like another Disney film when it is far from it. I mean, just look at how the marketing folks behind this film put Vanessa up front and center on the movie poster above! Even I dismissed the film for being another Disney dud after seeing the poster.

Folks close to the film are now saying that Summit Entertainment has failed incredibly at making this movie appeal to a wider audience and that there’s no way of going back at this point. So sad. Maybe I’ll go and watch this now though now that I know this.

Kristin Kreuk speaking Chinese in The Legend of Chun-Li

June 18, 2009 @ 2:38 pm

So I just finished watching Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li. In it, Kristin Kreuk plays Chun-Li who occasionally blurts out Chinese phrases (in both Cantonese and Mandarin) with a terrible, terrible accent. If you understand Cantonese, you’ll find this clip above, which I’ve edited slightly, to be laugh-out-loud funny.

For those who are wondering, YES, I do recommend that you watch this film. Simply because it is so bad — so bad that it’s actually kind of entertaining.

Adventures in bad gaming: Monopoly Here & Now

monopoly-here-and-now-intro

I like playing Monopoly. It’s one of those classic board games that I’ll always agree to join in on if somebody asks me to. Part of the reason why I like it so much is because the game encourages a lot of communication and bonding between individual players. It’s because of this same reason that the game fails miserably as a standalone PC port.

That’s right. Some company thought it would be a brilliant idea to market the game as a PC version, essentially doing away with everything that made the board game fun in the first place like, oh, I don’t know…ACTUALLY TOUCHING THE BOARD AND THE PIECES AND HANDLING THE MONEY.

As you can imagine, you don’t do any of this in the PC game. In fact, all you do really is click your mouse over dialog boxes and the computer animates the rest of the standard procedure (like sucking your cash away after you’ve bought a property).

In a word, this game sucks. I don’t think I’ve played a worse game on the computer in a very long time. Why I even bothered to play this in the first place is unknown to me, but I can assure you I won’t be playing it ever again. DELETED!

Dragonball Evolution movie trailer

December 10, 2008 @ 9:01 am

Oh my goodness, this Dragonball movie that’s coming out early next year looks like it’s going to ruin the Japanese cartoon for me. Who is OK-ing all of these Japanese exports to be made into American films?!

The scary thing is that with a name like “Dragonball Evolution”, you can pretty much bet that a sequel is already planned (my guess would be that there’s a whole series of movies planned, but no official word yet).

Anyway, watch the disgusting trailer below.
