The New York Bike Messenger Association has this free booklet that you can read up on that tells you all about the rights and privileges that bike messengers in NYC are allowed. It’s available as a free PDF or you can request a physical copy from them (but for all the trouble, you might as well just print it out).
There’s a lot of good information in the booklet including what to do if you get into an accident, how to handle the law, first aid remedies, and your rights as an employee (if you work for a messenger company). It’s fairly extensive and should provide you with a wealth of knowledge on biking in NYC.
