Man cut in half by train and lives to tell about it

In June 2006, Truman Duncan, a railroad switch operator at the Gunderson Southwest yard in Cleburne, TX, fell onto the tracks and was run over by a moving train. The incident caused Truman’s body to be taken under the wheels of the train car which weighed about 20,000 pounds. As you can guess, Truman’s body was literally sliced in two, but amazingly, he did not die and was in the right mind to call 911 himself for assistance.

Today, Truman is alive and well and speaking out about the accident and how his life is still rich and full despite the loss of his left leg, pelvis, and kidney. He hopes that his inspiring words will convince war veterans that it is still worth living even if you are seriously injured in war.

In 2008, Truman Duncan and one of the doctors that is credited with saving his life (after 23 surgeries!) sat down with Matt Lauer on the Today Show to talk about the accident and how Duncan is keeping his spirits up and well with family and friends supporting him.

Joseph Ades, New York City potato peeler salesman, dead at 75

Some sad news coming in this morning, as The New York Times is reporting that the gentlemen potato peeler Joseph Ades passed away on Sunday at the age of 75. Ades (pronounced AH-dess) was a corner staple in Union Square and some other places around New York City. If he was out selling his potato peelers that day, you would know even before you saw him because you could literally hear his voice from down the block. I can’t count the times I’ve seen this man selling his beloved potato peeler (it peels and cuts other things too) on the street, often saying the same lines over and over for hours. It’s amazing that he has done it for so long without being tired of it (at least he didn’t look tired). He sold the kitchen item with more enthusiasm and charisma than any other person I’ve ever seen trying to sell any other product!

Ades was a bit of a street performer too, as witnessed by the masses of people that would gather on a sidewalk corner to watch him peel potatoes, carrots, apples, pears, and just about anything else he could get his hands on. Joseph Ades never told anybody how much he made from his potato peelers, but one could assume he was pretty well off as evidenced in this Today Show segment showing his posh lifestyle and home on Park Ave [via].

If you want to see him in his element, selling his potato peelers on the streets of New York City, then head on over here and get viewing! RIP old man! The city will definitely be a bit quieter without you and your great voice.

Ann Curry and her dangerous adventures for NBC

January 30, 2009 @ 3:02 pm

To prepare you all for the sarcastic, dry humor that Sarah Haskins is bound to say this Sunday, here’s a hilarious segment of Target Women in which Sarah investigates how NBC is trying to kill Ann Curry.

Funny, but man would I love to have Ann Curry’s job in order to travel to so many places. Her passport must be stamped like mad.

The story and girl behind “Hey There Delilah”

January 24, 2008 @ 6:51 pm

Have you ever wondered whether the story and girl behind the song “Hey There Delilah” was real? Well, the girl is real, but the story in the song is somewhat conjured up. And yep, the girl’s name really is Delilah.

Five years ago, Delilah DiCrescenzo, now 24, met Tom Higgenson, the lead singer for the band Plain White T’s. Tom was “smitten” with Delilah at the time of the encounter and vowed to write a song about her in the future. Well, fast forward 5 years and “Hey There Delilah”, although not a very new song, has surprisingly and suddenly taken the world by storm. This past summer, you couldn’t go anywhere to escape this simple song.

From the Today Show:

Higgenson and his band played the song for years at club dates and concerts, and it became a favorite with their fans. But it wasn’t until last summer that it broke out into the mainstream and began climbing the charts until it was the nation’s top single. That was when Higgenson performed the song on TODAY and told Ann Curry the story of unrequited love that had inspired it.

DiCrescenzo, meanwhile, remained all but anonymous. A graduate of Columbia University, she had returned to her native Chicago to work. A good but not great runner in high school and college, she gave the 3,000-meter steeplechase a try in 2006 and found that she was good enough in the grueling race to think about trying to make the Olympic team this year. To pursue that dream, she moved to Conshohocken, Pa., where she trains full-time while working as an assistant track and cross-country coach at Bryn Mawr.

Also…ROFL. Watch the video to hear Matt Lauer read out the lyrics to “Hey There Delilah”. HILARIOUS! Haha, hearing Matt Lauer reading the lyrics just made my day. Here’s a clearer photo of Delilah running.
