This is an absolutely wonderful feel-good video from Ulterior Productions. This is why I love New York City, because people will just come up to an open mic and do whatever the hell they want. :)

This afternoon I went to the Joe Ades tribute and memorial down at Union Square. The gathering started promptly at 1pm and went on for about half an hour as people stood and recounted their memories of the interesting Union Square character. A bunch of locally famous people were there, including a man named Barry who supposedly founded the Green Market at Union Square. Ades’ children were also there to thank people for their love and support.
Reverend Billy was there to conduct the ceremonies, offering his own booming voice in tribute to Mr. Ades. Others brought their own vegetable peelers to the tribute and peeled carrots as people spoke into a mic about their encounters with Joseph Ades. The crowd was a modest size and I’m sure Ades would have made some smart remark about people gathering to remember him. It seems like something he’d do.
Here are some of the photos I took from the event. RIP Mr. Ades!

There’s going to be a tribute and memorial to the late Joseph “Joe” Ades in Union Square this Saturday at 1PM on the south steps near the statue. The organizer is asking everybody to take some time out of their day to remember the man who, at one time or another, had us mesmerized by his charisma and humor while selling vegetable peelers on the streets of New York City.
Invite anybody you want and bring a vegetable peeler if you’ve got one!

The Union Square Holiday Market opens its doors tomorrow (Saturday, November 22, 2008) at 10AM!
The holiday market is pretty much the only reason I’ll ever go to Union Square and hang around there (I normally try to avoid the area).
GONNA GET ME ANOTHER HAND PUPPET!

This is the video that I shot of the celebration in Union Square last night. The embedded YouTube video might be crap, so go to the YouTube page and watch it in high quality.
It was nuts, just nuts. I’m glad I was there for this. I think I’m going to go outside now and buy every major newspaper for my personal archive.

I just came back from Union Square where there’s a mega gathering going on to celebrate the election of Obama as President. Given the blue-state nature of New York, it’s no surprise to me that this happened as soon as the news broke out. Anyway, Norman, Simon and I stopped by and joined in on the festivities which included a huge (like, really really really big) flag being brought out and carried over people’s heads.
More photos inside. I took some videos as well, but I’ll post that later when I get it together.
