How a hurricane is born (you won’t believe the answer)
August 16, 2009 @ 12:17 am
Wait a second. So according to this BBC clip, many of the hurricanes that affect America’s East Coast each year could potentially have been caused by a single girl walking across the Saharan Desert?! I’m a bit disappointed that the explanation isn’t even more ridiculous than this.

The transformation of Madison Square
February 13, 2009 @ 5:44 pm
Every day I ride my bike along Broadway into Madison Square and then onto 5th Avenue. It’s my daily route to school and also to any point downtown from where I live. Every time I pass the area, I see people sitting, taking pictures, and thoroughly enjoying the wide-open public space that is safe from vehicles on both sides of the square.
I remember coming home last Summer from Australia and being utterly surprised by the drastic changes in traffic patterns in that area. From a bicyclist’s perspective, the area is a lot more convenient to travel through, and from a motorist’s perspective, it’s definitely less confusing to get from one avenue to another (Broadway and 5th Avenue split here).
Streetfilms has a fantastic video detailing the work it took to transform that public space into what it is today. Watch the video above if you want to know a bit more about the big stone bollards and the people behind the project.
The most annoying people in New York City
February 2, 2009 @ 4:16 am

With nothing better to write about, The New York Post has published an article that takes a look at a recent poll from People Who Deserve It that asks New Yorkers to vote for their least favorite type of person.
Reactions to the poll put slow-walking sidewalk blocker at the #1 spot with 29% of the votes. At a close second was self-important bluetooth guy (the guy who talks loudly into the air because he’s on a bluetooth headset on the street) with 24% of the votes. The Post created the image above to break it down for you in case you couldn’t think of the people on your own. However, with only about 2300 people voting, this is in no way an accurate representation of the sentiments of the average New Yorker. I suspect that if more New Yorkers voted, the percentage for slow-walking sidewalk blocker would be a lot higher. I hate slow-walking people.
