Making District 9 look real

August 17, 2009 @ 5:52 pm

WIRED has a behind-the-scenes look at the making of District 9, a fantastic sci-fi movie about aliens being hoarded together in a slum in Johannesburg, Africa.

Inside an electromechanical pinball machine

June 6, 2009 @ 3:34 am

WIRED caught up with an electromechanical pinball machine maker at Maker Faire 2009 and found out just how one of these old-school arcade pieces actually work and keep score. It’s a lot of technical information (I honestly don’t understand most of it), but it’s fascinating to see the inside of what I used to think was a fairly simple device. I would love to have a pinball machine in my own place in the future.

Wired’s sneak peak at Terminator Salvation

Underwire has exclusive images of the upcoming revamp of the Terminator franchise from McG, and the images are nothing short of exciting. The article talks about many things, one of which is how the filmmakers are going about creating a post-apocalyptic world using Chernobyl as a sort of inspiration. The film also has Charlie Gibson on board, one of the top special effects animators at Industrial Light & Magic. In a word, Terminator Salvation is looking like it’s going to be a good thing for the Terminator fans out there, and honestly I cannot wait for it to come out!

Head on over there to read the entire article. It’s long, but not too long and if you’re a Terminator fanatic, this should be a good appetizer to hold you over until the film comes out.

Oh, and how awesome is that motorcycle? Mmmm, yes!

Brian Chen and Powermat

January 10, 2009 @ 12:50 am

I have very high respect for Brian Chen and his job of reporting on gadgets and technology, so I don’t mean this comment in a bad way at all towards him. I just find it incredibly distracting and awkward the way Brian keeps looking back at the camera as the person he’s interviewing is talking to him (or talking about the product). It’s just…very weird looking.

Anyway, good stuff demonstrated here from Powermat, a company that makes mats that can charge devices wirelessly in real-time.

The life cycle of a blog post

On the surface, a blog is pretty simple and straightforward; a collection of posts by one or more authors that are about one (or more) related topic. In a nutshell, that’s what Doobybrain.com is. But behind the scenes, a blog is a complicated array of connections, communications, and computer-assisted intelligence that, if non-existent, would make blogging a complicated affair.

Happily, I don’t normally have to deal with the whole computer side of blogging, but it is nice to know sometimes how Doobybrain.com gets to be running so smoothly especially with the surge in readership. If you feel the same way, then you’ll want to check out WIRED’s Flash flow chart about the life cycle of a blog post.

The Flash graphic was made by London-based Build.

And since it was such a pain in the butt to get the SWF file off of WIRED’s server, I’ve done it for you so you can just right-click and save it to your computer for viewing. Download the file here.
