Wow, Patrick Bierut dedicates a roughly 1700-word article on The Hundreds' blog about YMBape, the man who got his 15-minutes of fame by harassing Supreme fans in and around NYC. I heard about this guy a little throughout this summer but I just thought it was all part of those highly planned and scripted prank viral videos. Basically, I just thought it was fake. But as I read Patrick's article further, it turns out it was very real and it ended pretty badly for YMBape after he was arrested and basically jumped by other guys on the street.
The question though is whether or not YMBape is streetwear's version of Donald Trump. Maybe? Both seem to, at this point at least, be trolling their respective bases and both seem to enjoy inciting anger and violence. Also, they both don't seem quite that capable of judging their surroundings when it is masked by a little bit of notoriety.
In the end, I'm glad YMBape faded away. He's still around, but not in any way like his former self. Streetwear doesn't need a guy like him. See ya.
