Rare Yellow Taxi Cabs of New York City: Mercedes-Benz E-class Bluetec

March 28, 2016

The taxi cab vehicle landscape in NYC is changing quickly these days, so I wanted to take some time out and feature some of the rarest forms of the taxi cab in recent history. While many New Yorkers and tourists know the yellow cab as a Ford Crown Victoria, Toyota Prius, or the Nissan NV200, a select number of vehicles in the TLC fleet are in fact unique cars. There are a few reasons why these exist. It could be related to money paid for the medallion, it could be the fuel-efficiency of the car, or it could be the fact that the car is unique because it is a diesel engine (rare among taxi cabs in NYC).

Whatever the reason, it's always fun to spot these less than common vehicles in the wild. For me, it's kind of like a game I guess, and one that gives me the same sort of giddy excitement that I get when I see a rare sportscar zooming down city streets. Maybe it's a car thing or maybe it's a New Yorker thing.

Anyway, here is the NYC yellow cab in one of its rarest forms, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Bluetec.

One of my favorite Brutalist structures, the Adam Clayton Powell Jr. state office building. It is a giant concrete building shaped like an African mask (it has "eyes" on the side).

#filmscan #6x7 A truly great and funny guy, @ryanmosse! That time we hung out at Times Square when it only had 4 train lines...
Sorry @hermanthreetimes, we decided to put this one here instead! #stupid35
This is how I started the year -- in Atlanta exploring quarries and trying to hop fences into train yards in the Bronx (it didn't work out). Then I photographed some brooms in Brooklyn. #contactsheets #contactsheet #filmscan #6x7
